If you’ve ever been out in the rain (and we haven’t ruled that out in the past few weeks), you know that your hair takes the brunt of it. Rainy weather (or even just a lot of humidity in the air) can lead to frizz and unmanageable hair. But don’t worry, we’ve got some tips to protect your hair from the vagaries of mother nature and keep your hair looking seriously beautiful even on a rainy day. Sit back and relax!
The effects of rain on your hair
Rainwater or humid air can disrupt your hair’s natural moisture balance. This makes it prone to frizz and frizz. Because your hair absorbs water, your hair cuticles swell. The result? Frizzy hair that sticks out in all directions. Not nice!
How do you keep your hair under control in humid or rainy weather?
First of all: use anti-frizz products! This will solve 70% of the problem! Invest in high-quality anti-frizz hair products, such as serums, oils and sprays. Apply these products to damp hair to prevent moisture from penetrating and making your hair frizzy. However, not all products have these anti-frizz properties. So pay close attention to the ingredients on the packaging.
Some of the most common ingredients that can promote an anti-frizz effect in the hair are:
- Silicones : Silicones, such as dimethicone and cyclomethicone, form a protective layer over the hair that prevents moisture from penetrating. This helps smooth the hair cuticle and reduces frizz. Silicones also make hair smoother and shinier.
- Glycerin : Glycerin is a humectant that can attract and retain moisture from the air. It helps maintain the hair's hydration, thereby preventing dryness and frizz.
- Fatty Alcohols : Fatty alcohols, such as cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol, are often used in hair products for their softening and conditioning properties. They help tame frizz by softening and moisturizing the hair.
- Shea Butter : Shea butter is a natural ingredient that provides deep hydration and can help soften dry, frizzy hair.
- Argan Oil : Argan oil is rich in fatty acids and antioxidants. It can nourish, hydrate and protect hair from humidity damage.
- Keratin : Keratin is a protein that occurs naturally in hair. Hair products with added keratin can help repair damaged hair and reduce frizz.
- Jojoba Oil : Jojoba oil is lightweight and non-greasy. It can help balance the natural oils in the hair and scalp, which can help reduce frizz.
- Polymers : Polymers, such as polyquaterniums, form a film-like layer over the hair and help smooth the hair cuticle. This prevents moisture from penetrating and reduces frizz.
- Hyaluronic Acid : Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that can bind moisture to the hair and hydrate it.
It is important to note that the effectiveness of anti-frizz products depends on several factors, including your hair type and the specific formula of the product. So it can be helpful to try different products to see which one works best for your hair.
Other tips
Choose looks that protect your hair. For example, braid, bun or ponytail to expose it to the rain as little as possible.
Wear a silk scarf or hat: Wrap your hair in a silk scarf or wear a soft hat to keep it from getting wet. Silk is gentle on your hair and helps reduce friction and frizz.

Use colorful hair pins or hair jewelry to brighten up your look on a rainy day. They draw attention away from any frizz.
Rub a tiny amount of '76 Grooming Cream between your palms and gently smooth it through your hair to add shine and reduce frizz. Not too much, because it works instantly. It has a very light hold, but controls the hair perfectly and makes the 'frizz' disappear.
