Create a glamorous New Year's Eve look with an elegant updo that will last all night long. With these steps and top tips from our founder and Hairdresser of the Year Andy Uffels, you can make sure your hair is as sparkling as the festive evening itself. At the end of this blog you will see an overview of the products you need to create this glamorous look.
Step 1: Prepare
Start by washing your hair with a volumizing shampoo and follow with a light conditioner. Normal routine. Then apply a heat protection spray to shield your locks from the heat of styling tools. This is important for the long-term health of your hair.
Step 2: Dry or blow-dry
Towel dry your hair thoroughly. Then use a mousse or thickening spray to create a good base for volume. Make sure you apply the product right to the roots of your hair! Then let your hair dry naturally if you have thick, wavy hair, or use a blow-dryer with a diffuser to blow-dry for extra volume. The more volume you can get, the better. So make sure you have a good size round brush. A size that is too small will make blow-drying difficult and will not give you enough volume, while a size that is too big will give you beautifully polished and smooth hair, but less volume. Note: you need volume at the roots.
Step 3: Create Texture
After blow-drying, use a curling iron to create soft waves in your hair. Do not create curls, just a wave. This adds texture and forms the perfect base for your updo. Note: make sure your curling iron does not get hotter than 195 degrees. This is to protect your hair well for the long term.
Step 4: Retreat
Gently pull your hair back into a high or low bun or chignon at the back of your head. Before you do this, spritz your hair with a dry shampoo that will give your roots some texture! Then, create a low ponytail before you create your bun or chignon. This will give your pins more hold and help your look last longer. Use pins that match your hair color to keep it in place. Go for double security. For extra security, use double pins when securing your updo. Place the first pin and cross the second over it to anchor it.
Step 5: Final touch
Add a few festive hair accessories like a sparkly hair pin or clip to accentuate your look. You can also loosen up your hair by 'pulling out' a few strands to give it a more casual look.
Step 6: Fixing
Use a flexible, light hairspray with a good hold to fix your style without weighing it down. The choice of hairspray is important, also because the scent lingers in your hair! Take a small touch-up kit with you when you go out. Make sure to have extra pins, a mini hairspray, and a small jar of hair wax or pomade. This way you can quickly touch up any flyaways.
Aftercare: After the party night
Step 1: Gentle Cleansing
After a night of partying, start the next day with a gentle shampoo to remove any product residue.
Step 2: Deep Conditioning
Treat your hair with a deep conditioner or hair mask to restore moisture and nourish your hair.
