Interview with hairstylist and founder of The Insiders, Andy Uffels: Shampoo Myths Debunked

Interview met haarstylist en founder van The Insiders, Andy Uffels: Shampoo Mythen Ontkracht
Today I'm interviewing Andy in his studio in Amersfoort about shampoos while he's testing new products. I'm Kim, a colleague of Andy's and part of the co-creation team for new products.

Kim: Andy, there are so many myths about shampoo in the hair care world. Can you help us debunk some of these myths?

Andy Uffels : Of course, please! I hear so many myths about shampoos and hair washing over the years, so I'm happy to help clear things up.

Kim : OK, let's start with the first myth: you should change your shampoo regularly. What's your opinion on this?

Andy Uffels : Many people believe that their hair gets ‘used’ to a certain shampoo and that they therefore have to change it regularly. However, this is not true. If you have found a shampoo that works well for your hair type, you can continue to use it without any negative consequences. The most important thing is to choose a shampoo that suits your specific needs, such as hydration, volume or colour retention. We have a range of shampoos designed for different hair types and needs. For example, our Bring the Bounce Shampoo is perfect for curly hair and keeps it frizz-free and manageable. So there is a solution for every problem.

Kim : What can you tell us about the myth that washing your hair every day is bad?

Andy : That’s a common myth. How often you wash your hair depends on your hair type and lifestyle. People with oily hair can benefit from washing daily, while people with dry or curly hair may need to wash less often. The key is to use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo that won’t strip your hair of its natural oils.

Kim : Which of your products would you recommend for this?

Andy : Try our Kiss of Life Shampoo . This gentle formula effectively cleanses without drying out your hair, making it ideal for daily use.

Kim : It is also said that shampoo can stimulate hair growth. Is this true?

Andy : Unfortunately, no shampoo can directly stimulate hair growth. Hair grows from the follicles in your scalp and growth is primarily influenced by genetics and health. What shampoo can do is create a healthy environment for your hair to grow by keeping your scalp clean and free of excess oils and buildup.

Kim : What would you recommend to maintain a healthy scalp?

Andy : Ours Kiss of Life Shampoo contains ingredients that promote scalp health, such as vitamins and antioxidants, which can indirectly contribute to healthier looking hair.

Kim : Another myth is that foam means your hair will be clean. What is your position on this?

Andy Uffels : The foam that shampoo produces is mainly a cosmetic effect and says nothing about how well it cleans your hair. Many foaming shampoos contain sulfates which are harsh detergents and can strip natural oils from your hair.

Kim : Which shampoo from The Insiders would you recommend for this?

Andy Uffels : For example, use our Daydream Volume Shampoo . This sulfate-free shampoo cleanses your hair thoroughly without excess foam and preserves your hair's natural oils. In addition, it gives you natural volume and makes your hair easier to style.

Kim : Some people say you don't need to use conditioner if you have a good shampoo. What do you think?

Andy : That’s definitely not true. Shampoo cleanses your hair, but conditioner is essential to hydrate your hair and protect it from damage. Even if you use a great shampoo, conditioner can help make your hair soft, shiny and easier to comb. Always use it!

Kim : What would you recommend as a conditioner?

Andy : That really depends on your hair and the result you want to achieve Kim. Combine your shampoo with the matching conditioner and search the assortment well. A complete hair care routine that nourishes and protects your hair will give you really o, healthy hair in the long run.

Kim : What about the myth that natural shampoos are always better?

Andy : While natural ingredients can offer benefits, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re better for every hair type. It’s important to pay attention to the specific ingredients and how they interact with your hair. Some natural ingredients can actually be irritating to certain hair types or scalp conditions. A combination of natural and technical ingredients almost always gives the best results. We combine the best of natural and scientifically advanced ingredients in our products.

Kim : Which shampoo from The Insiders is a good example of this?

Andy : Ours Walk on the Beach Shampoo For example, offers a balanced mix of natural and effective ingredients to keep your hair healthy and shiny. Really a very cool product, that makes you feel like you just came from the beach. Plus it smells delicious!

Kim : Finally, is there a difference between cold and warm water when rinsing out shampoo?

Andy : Water of any temperature can rinse shampoo effectively. The important thing is to rinse your hair thoroughly to ensure that there is no product residue left behind that can weigh your hair down or make it look dull.

Kim : Thank you, Andy, for these illuminating insights and tips. Is there anything else you would like to add?

Andy : Yes, remember that finding the right products and routine is a personal journey. It can sometimes take a while to find the right products. But that time investment is definitely worth it. It is important to listen to what your hair needs. We can help you on your way to healthier, more beautiful hair by just getting in touch, we do it with love.

Kim : Thank you for your time and valuable advice, Andy.

Andy Uffels : You're welcome!
