The Curly Girl Method: Why It Sometimes Doesn't Work + Tips

De Curly Girl Methode: Waarom het soms niet werkt + tips

The Curly Girl Method (CGM) has helped many people embrace their natural curls and improve their hair health. But if you find that your curls aren’t giving you the results you’re hoping for, you’re not alone. This doesn’t mean your hair is “difficult” – it could just be that your curls need something different.

In this blog we explain why the CGM sometimes doesn't work and how you can adapt the method to your unique hair.

What is the Curly Girl Method again?

The CGM is a hair routine developed by Lorraine Massey, designed to keep curls healthy, hydrated and defined. The method recommends avoiding sulfates, silicones and heat, and using moisturizing products and styling techniques. While this works for many, others experience dryness, frizz or lack of definition.

Why doesn't the CGM always work perfectly?

  1. Every hair is different
Every hair type has unique needs. What works for one person may not work for another. Your hair texture, porosity, curl pattern, and even your living environment (think humidity) will determine how your hair responds to certain products and routines. If you don’t know your hair type well, you may struggle to find the right products and techniques.
  2. Avoiding silicone is not always necessary
The CGM advises to avoid silicones, because they form a layer around the hair that is difficult to remove. But that does not apply to all silicones. Volatile and water-soluble silicones actually make a positive contribution to the health and appearance of your curls. They protect the hair against moisture loss, give shine and reduce frizz, without building up. Examples of these are dimethicone copolyol and cyclomethicone.
  3. Too strict rules limit your options
Strictly avoiding sulfates, silicones, and heat can sometimes backfire. For example, a little sulfate can be helpful in removing product buildup, and controlled heat like diffusing can help define your curls. Adapting your routine to your needs often gives better results than blindly following the rules.

How do you make the CGM suitable for you?

  1. Get to know your hair
Analyze your hair type, porosity, and needs. For example, does your hair need more hydration or protein? How does it react to heavy products? The better you understand your hair, the more focused your choices can be.
  2. Use silicone correctly
If your hair remains dry or frizzy, consider using products with volatile or water-soluble silicones. These silicones provide a beautifully groomed appearance and a protective layer without suffocating your hair. Combine this with a clarifying shampoo once a month to keep your hair clean without damage.
  3. Be flexible
The CGM provides a great base, but it’s not a set recipe. Do you need sulfates occasionally to deep clean your hair? Great. Do you want to use silicones because they help your hair shine and reduce frizz? Go for it! It’s all about what works for your hair.
  4. Experiment with techniques
Techniques like scrunching, plopping or finger coiling can do a lot for your curl definition. Try different methods and see what suits your hair and lifestyle.
  5. Deep cleanse and moisturize
Once a month, add a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup and follow up with an intense hydrating treatment. This will help your hair stay healthy and resilient.

Your hair, your rules

The Curly Girl Method is a great guide, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. By adapting your routine to your hair’s unique needs—and embracing silicone when it works—you can still achieve the healthy, shiny curls you’ve been dreaming of.

Remember: what works best for your hair is up to you. Give your curls what they need, don't be afraid to experiment and enjoy the process!
