Our founder and hairstylist Andy has seen many people with brittle hair in his years of salon experience. In this blog, we discuss what causes brittle hair, how to recognize it, and what steps you can take to treat and strengthen it. The term 'brittle hair' is quite well-known, but what does it actually mean? We ask Andy: “Brittle hair is a common problem that many people experience, and it can have a number of causes, ranging from genetics to environmental factors and lifestyle choices. Brittle hair is not nice and convenient, especially if you want to style your hair properly. It is better to start styling your hair from healthy hair. That is why it is nice that we can provide an overview of the causes and solutions.”
What causes brittle hair?
Brittle hair can be caused by a combination of internal and external factors. Some common causes include:
Genetics: Sometimes brittle hair is simply the result of genetics. If brittle hair runs in your family, you may be at a higher risk of experiencing it too. It’s hard to check if this is the case, but if multiple family members have it, including yourself, that could be the cause.
Excessive Heat: Frequent use of heat tools such as blow dryers, straighteners and curling irons can damage the protein structure of the hair, making it brittle.
Chemical Treatments: Regularly coloring, bleaching or chemically straightening your hair can strip away its natural oils and proteins, leaving hair brittle and vulnerable.
Improper hair care: Using 'harsh' shampoos (such as a deep clean shampoo) or styling products high in alcohol that strip the hair of its natural oils can contribute to brittleness.
Environmental factors: Factors such as sun exposure, wind, cold air (air conditioning) and pollution can also contribute to brittle hair by drying out and damaging the hair cuticle.
How do you recognize brittle hair?
Brittle hair often shows a number of clear signs that can help to recognize it. Look for the following points:
Split Ends: One of the most common signs of brittle hair is the occurrence of split ends, where the hair ends split and appear dry and damaged.
Brittleness: Brittle hair is often fragile and breaks easily, especially when brushing, combing or styling.
Dryness: Hair can look and feel dull, dry and lifeless, indicating a lack of hydration and nourishment.
Loss of Elasticity: Healthy hair has natural elasticity, while brittle hair feels a bit 'stiff' and brittle and is difficult to bend without breaking.
Tips for treating and strengthening brittle hair
Luckily, there are several steps you can take to treat and strengthen brittle hair, making it look healthier and more vibrant. We asked Andy to give us some insider expertise J:
Andy: “ Getting regular haircuts to remove split ends can definitely help prevent further damage and make your hair look healthier. That’s the first step I would do.
Then use hydrating shampoos and conditioners and masks that are designed to hydrate and nourish dry and brittle hair. Also a good oil (like our Go With The Glow Oil ), helps preventatively and protects the hair well.
I would also reduce the frequency of using heat tools like curling irons or even stop using them altogether. It is very important to use products with a heat protector . Check this carefully on the packaging, because it is essential and makes a big difference in the long run.
Also try to reduce the use of harsh chemical treatments such as bleaching and colouring and opt for more natural colour alternatives if possible. Nowadays vegan colourings are much softer and gentler on the hair.
In terms of looks; choose looks and styling techniques that do not overload the hair and maintain its natural texture. For example, pay close attention to the elastics you use. These should be made of soft fabric and do not put too much tension on the hair.
As a final tip I would like to give you to protect your hair as much as possible from harmful environmental factors such as the sun, wind and pollution. This can be done by wearing a cap, hat or scarf.
I am confident that if you apply these tips and pay proper attention to your hair's needs, you can treat your brittle hair and transform it into healthier, stronger and more radiant hair.”
